06/13/2005 - Speed is of the Essence
MCEI Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan

People sometimes invoke serendipity -- fortuitous chance occurrences -- to explain their success.

Yet serendipity is not all luck. Rather, serendipity -- good luck -- only benefits positive thinkers who are able to think things through and seize the moment. Good luck unused is no luck at all.  Thus it is all the more important that businesspeople not fall prey to negativism and defeatism -- all the more important that you be used to thinking things through to their core.

Yet even if people are able to serendipitously come up with highly original, cutting-edge ideas, there is always someone, somewhere who has the same idea independently. With so many people thinking so hard worldwide, how could it be otherwise? And this synchronicity is both a fact of life and a potential pitfall for everyone.

Which is why it is so important, when serendipity strikes, you be prepared to move quickly to capitalize on your good fortune. Because if you don't, somebody else will.
