HistoryThe Tokyo Chapter was founded in 1969 to give marketing professionals in the Tokyo area greater opportunities to network for the fuller exchange of information and ideas.
ActivitiesThe Tokyo Chapter has an ambitious schedule of monthly meetings with outstanding speakers. In addition to these general-interest meetings of all of the members, the Chapter also offers smaller, more specialized meetings monthly. These meetings alternate between subjects of specific interest to the distribution sector and subjects of broader social interest. The Tokyo Chapter issues a monthly Bulletin that includes not only reports on the general monthly meetings but interviews with leading marketers, membership notes, and more. This Bulletin is issued in cooperation with the Osaka Chapter. In addition, the Tokyo and Osaka Chapters publish 100 People, 100 Voices, an annual anthology of articulate marketing insights that shares thinking from a wide range of personal and professional perspectives. This anthology is widely read not only by Chapter members but by non-member marketers throughout Japan. Internationally, the Chapter is active in the MCEI Marketing Excellence Competition, including not only organizing its local competition but also sponsoring the winning entries as they enter the international competition. Looking at international meetings, the Chapter is regularly represented at the MCEI World Congresses (held in odd-numbered years) and the Asian Marketing Conferences held with Melbourne, Osaka, and Taipei in even-numbered years. Indeed, Tokyo has provided speakers every year and has hosted a number of conferences in each category. Seeking to enhance the profession’s standing and to help new marketing professionals get up to speed better and faster, the Tokyo Chapter inaugurated the MCEI Tokyo Business School in 2001. This outreach program features top speakers from a wide range of companies. There are typically two speakers at each of the seven monthly sessions. As well as writing reports every month on how the month’s presentations apply to their own work, students are also required to write papers at the end of the program. All of the student work is reviewed by senior marketing executives. Please see Appendix 2 for the 2004 program. Membership
